speak to us as glimmers on the water, as the movement of animals

Not too long ago, through the grace of a good friend, we ended up backstage with writer and artist Doug Coupland at an OMD concert, the band best known for their epic ballad If You Leave which was featured in the John Hughes classic Pretty in Pink. Doug was adorably enthusiastic about OMD’s music and we found ourselves thinking, wonder what’s on his iPod? Recently, he answered this very question with a decidedly Brit-bent mix which is part of an ongoing series called A Soundtrack to My Life, programmed by the Waldorf Hotel in Vancouver in which various local luminaries share their favourite tracks. The idea of a soundtrack to one’s life is a great one – remembering where and when you first heard a perennial favourite on your playlist, that summer when one song dominated the airwaves, the way the chorus of a tune immediately takes you back to the road trip where it was sung, badly, over and over and over again. We immediately found ourselves going through iTunes wondering what would comprise our own Soundtrack to Life. You can listen to Doug’s mix here which includes the following tunes:

1. “Genetic Engineering”- OMD
2. “Suffragette City (Live Version)”- David Bowie
3. “Route 66 (Beatmaster’s Mix)”- Depeche Mode
4. “586 (Peel Sessions)”- New Order
5. “Let Me In”- R.E.M.
6. “Jerusalem”- Herb Alpert
7. “The Disadvantages of You”- Brass Ring
8. “Merge, a Vessel, a Harbour”- Great Lake Swimmers
9. “Canada Geese”- Gord Downie
10. “Alsatian Cousin”- Morrissey
11. “The Sailor in Love with the Sea” – The 6ths
12. “Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam”- Nirvana
13. “Time Zones”- OMD
14. “Opportunities”- Pet Shop Boys
15. “The Queen is Dead”- The Smiths
16. “Anarchy in the UK” -New Order

Doug Coupland hardly needs an introduction but you might be interested to check out his exhibition Douglas Coupland: Twenty-first Century at Trepanier Baer Gallery, Calgary until January 7, 2012.
