I generally don’t visit Burnaby Heights very often, but since close friends have moved into the neighbourhood, I’ve found myself in the area with increasing frequency. One weekend morning we met for brunch and headed to Chez Meme Baguette Bistro on their recommendation. It happened to be the one Saturday a month that Chez Meme is open so we were in luck. This tiny, hole-in-the-wall restaurant that you would never notice on a strip populated by butcher shops was packed by the time we arrived but we were able to snag a table. The woman who sat us had what appeared to be an authentic French accent which I found very encouraging. The menu consists of very simple French bistro style food. I ordered the goat cheese omelette that was accompanied by two slices of the best baguette I’ve had in Vancouver (which I guess isn’t really saying much…), crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle, and a huge mound of thick-cut roasted potatoes. I’m not much of a brunch person — as a former vegan I rarely find myself craving eggs — yet this omelette was among the best I’ve ever had. It was cooked to perfection and oozing with high quality cheese. My friend had the brioche French toast which is as decadent as it sounds. Having now sampled their baguette I will definitely be back for lunch to taste one of their mammoth sandwich options. The service can be slow during peak times so don’t head there if you don’t have the luxury of enjoying a leisurely meal. (SR)
