After much poking, prodding and pestering, I was given permission to organize my boyfriend’s birthday party – his only request was that the festivities be low-key and casual. The Bayside Lounge fit the bill perfectly. With a central, sunken bar and wrap-around windows giving a stellar view of English Bay, the Bayside seems like a time-machine to the 80s. Tom Cruise circa Cocktail comes to mind. I didn’t grow up in Vancouver, but those who did reminisce fondly about the days when the Bayside had phones on the tables which would inevitably, as drinks were consumed, be used to dial your neighbours – very exciting in the days before mobile phones! Set in the Sands Hotel, the Bayside is a relaxed place for an after work drink (when it’s rarely crowded) or a raucous place on a Saturday night with a DJ pumping. The last time I was there, the 25 people in our party bounced from seat to seat and the waitress was right on top of everyone’s drinks and bills which was most impressive. At heart, the Bayside is just a neighborhood joint without gimmick or pretention, where you can watch the sunset and commune with nature – safely inside, with a drink in hand. (EL)
