It’s one of life’s great mysteries: why does a city like Vancouver which is poised on the Pacific and boasts stunning mountain views have so few fantastic patios which take advantage of its stellar location?! I’m the first to admit I’m not a fan of the great outdoors, so my main summertime communion with nature consists of drinks on a deck and it seems a shame most patios in Vancouver are landlocked. If you can brave the slow-moving tourists on Granville Island, Dockside Restaurant’s outdoor lounge is a hidden gem at the back of the Granville Island Hotel looking onto False Creek. They have recently refurbished their spacious patio with outdoor fireplaces and a heated cabana, complete with black and white curtains that call Miami to mind. It’s a relaxed and comfortable place to enjoy beverages including refreshing mojitos or one of eight signature beers from an in-house brewery. I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the dining options which are average at best, but I really go just for the outdoor set up. Also, be forewarned – since the outdoor space acts as a sort of courtyard to the Granville Island Hotel, just when you get going, they may be shutting down; by 11 pm you have to clear the deck. Picturesque boats bob at the foot of deck taunting those of us who are ashore and every time I’m there I think to myself I need more friends with boats…(EL)
