The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, which is part of the University of British Columbia, exhibits contemporary art in all media, and develops programs in contemporary approaches to art historical curating and art criticism. It has a diverse program which has included a haunting exhibition of works by German painter Daniel Richter, Stan Douglas’ photographs and videos shot in Cuba, Glenn Ligon’s socially and politically charged work and Judy Radul’s multi-media installation exploring theatricality set in a court of law. Some of Director/Curator Scott Watson’s most interesting programming takes the temperature of the contemporary art scene in Vancouver with exhibitions like Exponential Future featuring artists such as Tim Lee, Isabelle Pauwels and Kevin Schmidt, reminiscent of his now fabled 6: New Vancouver Modern (1998) which featured the work of artists who have since catapulted to international prominence (Geoffrey Farmer, Steven Shearer and Ron Terada).
