I realize I’m stating the obvious here, but with the infectious spread of reality shows and the Mad Men salary dispute, there’s nothing good on TV anymore. And with the recent decimation of Blockbuster and Videomatica, I’ve had no choice but to resort to the DVD vending machine at the local Safeway in desperation when I want to escape into the screen. Then, I remembered the Cinemathèque. A cinephile friend had been insisting I see La Dolce Vita literally for years, knowing I would love it, and I had shamefully never gotten around to watching it until I managed to catch it at this old-school 194-seat theatre. There’s something truly enjoyable about seeing a good film in a theatre up on the big screen with an audience. The Cinemathèque does second-run screenings of universally lauded cinematic masterpieces, like the Fellini classic, but it also features new releases or obscure gems and often does ‘curated’ nights of 2 or 3 films that play off of one another insightfully. They like to call it essential cinema – I agree. (EL)
