In the fall of 2010, 3 institutions with spaces outside the downtown core jointly launched the Satellite Gallery – the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, the Museum of Anthropology (both located at the University of British Columbia) and Presentation House Gallery (in North Vancouver). Billed as a ‘project space’, the gallery’s mandate is experimental – intending to explore the boundaries between artistic and institutional practices. In its short history, it has exhibited the work of local artists Rebecca Belmore, Glenn Lewis, and Damian Moppett; a painting show by Hornby Island artist Gordon Payne opened the 2011 fall season. We are curious to see where this space will go with 3 diverse institutions at the helm. Located above Club 560, Satellite Gallery’s 1200 square feet of exhibition space adjoins the privately run Blanket Gallery, which often schedules their openings on the same night.
