The Vancouver Art Gallery hosts a myriad of events ranging from openings and talks to galas and children’s activities, but my favourite amidst all this activity are David Wisdom’s slide show nights. Wisdom may be best known as a former CBC radio host, but he has also been taking photographs since the late 1960s and amongst those in the know, he has been hosting legendary Slide Festivals off and on since the 1970s that have seen the participation of his friends and other artists including Rodney Graham, Jeff Wall and Ian Wallace. The artists involved present a series of images set to music creating an altogether different experience of the imagery and spoken like a former DJ, Wisdom has stated: “My real interest is in performance rather than in photography, so that also leads me a certain kind of order and sequencing; that is, with an audience and the element of entertainment in mind.”

Two Summer Slide Nights are scheduled, coinciding with the VAG’s summer hours that keep the Gallery open until 9 on Sundays. The first is this July 22 and includes Neil Wedman, Glenn Lewis, Lyse Lemieux, Jennilee Marigomen, Matt Savage, Mike Grill, Eden Vaudry, and David Wisdom as well as live music by Nick Wisdom and other Jellyfish Recordings artists. The second is on August 17 and includes Doug Lander, Aaron Carpenter, Ruth Skinner, Paul Scrivener, Brad Phillips, Jamie Dolinko, Barrie Jones, Connie Kuhns, David Wisdom, and Live music by The Rodney Graham Band.
