Herman Miller: Why Design

By Stephanie Rebick | Posted on November 1st, 2012

The furniture design powerhouse Herman Miller is one of those rare companies that seem almost as interested in preserving their legacy and recounting the history and importance of their industry as they do in financial success. The company directs a considerable amount of resources towards self promotion and constructing and selling a narrative based on their importance in design history. Whenever I have a few moments to kill I love to play around with their Discovering Design interactive exhibit that mines the Herman Miller archives to create a compelling history of modern furniture design. Their latest informational effort is Why Design, a weekly video series launched in September that features design professionals waxing philosophical on the merits of design. So far videos have featured an impressive roster of designers including Ayse Birsel, Yves Behar and Studio 7.5, and once again Herman Miller has seduced me into visiting their website on a weekly basis.
