Philippe Starck’s Louis Ghost Chair

By Stephanie Rebick | Posted on October 17th, 2012

It’s hard to believe that it’s only been ten years since design-star Philippe Starck first unveiled his classic Louis Ghost Chair. Starck’s playful — and irreverent — interpretation of the classic Louis XV armchair became an icon of 21st century design, a manifestation of the postmodern aesthetic sensibility. A commercial success as well, the Louis Ghost Chair has sold more than 1.5 million pieces to date, making it the most popular “original design” chair in history. To honour the tenth anniversary of Starck’s design, Kartell — the Italian furniture company — has released a special edition series of the chair and has created an inventive window display in their Milan flagship, in addition to a number of short videos and a catalogue that highlights the chair’s important place in contemporary design history.
